Italy
is blessed with a generally pleasant and temperate climate, due
to the moderating influence of the sea and the Alpine barrier,
which shields most of the country from cold, north winds. Nevertheless,
the weather varies depending on elevation and the proximity to
the sea. Winters range from very cold in the Alps, cool and foggy
in the northern/central regions, to mild and even warm on the
Italian Riviera, Amalfi Coast and in Sicily. Summers are hot and
dry, but coastal areas are tempered by sea breezes, and the Apennines
and Alps remain pleasantly cool.
